Vacuum cleaners can be very expensive to buy, but there are plenty of budget models available to purchase in the UK.
Before you buy, it’s worth considering the size of your home, whether you have pets, and how often you’ll need to use the vacuum cleaner. Some vacuum cleaners are ideal for small flats and holiday homes, but might not be effective for cleaning a larger home, or for a household with pets and thick carpets.
Read the guide below to find out more about some of the budget vacuum cleaners currently available in the UK.
1. VonHaus Stick Vacuum Cleaner
The VonHaus Stick Vacuum cleaner is one of the cheapest vacuum cleaners available on the market, and it has a super lightweight and slim design making it ideal for cleaning hard to reach areas. There is a detachable extension tube, which turns the appliance into a compact handheld vacuum cleaner, ideal for cleaning the trickiest places such as under beds and settees.
This vacuum doesn’t have the most powerful suction power and can struggle to pick up some dirt and dust from certain kinds of carpets.
It can also become clogged quite easily, meaning the dust cup has to be emptied frequently, and also dust can collect in the fins on the main filter affecting suction power and performance.
This vacuum cleaner also has quite a short cable, so it has to be unplugged and plugged in again to reach all parts of a large room.
The VonHaus Stick Vacuum cleaner isn’t the most convenient or powerful budget cleaner available, but for the very cheap price it’s still worth considering for small flats, holiday homes or student accommodation.
2. Duronic VC8 /BK Upright Stick Vacuum Cleaner
The Duronic VC8 is a small but powerful vacuum cleaner (600W rated/800W MAX power), recommended for small flats or rooms, or as a second vacuum cleaner in larger houses when you need to quickly clean up a mess upstairs without carrying up a larger appliance.
It works well on surfaces such as wood or tiles, but struggles to perform on any carpet. It’s not suitable for vacuuming pet hairs, although a turbo brush is available for this purpose which has to be purchased separately.
This vacuum is small and easy to store, so it’s great if you live in a small flat with mostly hard floors to clean.
Duronic clearly state that this vacuum cleaner is only suitable for smaller flats, and if you live in larger house you should buy a larger vacuum cleaner to reduce frequent emptying of the dust compartment.
3. Morphy Richards 732002 2-in-1 Supervac Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
The Morphy Richards 73002 2-in-1 Supervac Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is slightly more expensive than some of the budget vacuum cleaners available, however it has the convenience of being cordless, making it easy to move around your home. The collapsible handle means it’s also small and easy to store if you’re struggling for space. It can also be used as a handheld vacuum cleaner, so hard to reach areas can be cleaned more easily.
This is a convenient and easy to use vacuum cleaner, but it’s often not powerful enough for removing dirt and debris from all types of flooring, particularly thicker carpets.
The dust compartment is also quite small, which means it requires emptying frequently. Some of the dirt picked up during vacuuming can fall out onto the floor again when the appliance is switched off. This is certainly one of the easiest models to store and to use, but it does lack suction power.
4. Ovation HT107 800W Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
The Ovation HT107 800W Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is an ultra-lightweight, cordless vacuum cleaner. It’s light and effortless to move around and easy to store in a small home or flat.
The handle folds both backwards and forwards, which means it can clean difficult to reach spaces easily, but also fits well into small spaces and cupboards.
This vacuum comes with an extra tool for cleaning upholstery, so it’s ideal for cleaning furniture and cars too. You will get around thirty minutes cleaning power from a single charge, which is enough to clean a small flat.
Although it may not be as powerful as some higher range vacuum cleaners, this is still a powerful cordless cleaner for a reasonable price, and may be ideal for those who live in small flats and for anyone who struggles to lift a large vacuum cleaner.
5. Hoover Hurricane Power Bagless Pets Upright Vacuum Cleaner
The Hoover Hurricane Power Bagless Pets Upright Vacuum Cleaner is a good value option if you have a slightly bigger home, and particularly if you have pets.
It has a longer hose than some models meaning it’s easy to clean the stairs, and it also comes with a pets turbo brush to effectively remove pet hair from your home.
The large 3 Litre bin means you don’t have to empty it too often, even after cleaning the whole house. This is quite a large and heavy vacuum cleaner, and may not be suitable for those who struggle with lifting.
It’s very effective at removing dirt, pet hairs and debris from carpets, however it can struggle to pick up dirt on hard floors.
