I am sure you’ll agree that using harsh chemicals on a mattress isn’t ideal. In fact, if you’re like a lot of our readers, you may be trying to switch out all of your cleaning products for natural cleaning products.
They work just as well but don’t leave chemical residues and nasty smells all around your home. If that’s that case, can you use bicarbonate of soda to clean your mattress? Well, good question, let’s find out, shall we?
Can You Clean a Mattress with Bicarbonate of Soda?
Bicarbonate of soda can be used to help clean your mattress, but it can’t do the job by itself. It is fantastic for getting rid of smells but doesn’t work particularly well on stains by itself. So, what can you do?
Bicarb + Vodka for Cleaning a Mattress
Mixing bicarbonate of soda with vodka may not make a cocktail that you’d want to serve at your next dinner party. Still, it sure makes just about the perfect mattress cleaner.
You can use neat vodka on stains on your mattress. Just put a small amount of vodka on the stain, let it soak up the stain for a few minutes and wipe it with a cloth. You can also use a mix of vodka and water to remove some odours. Still, bicarbonate of soda does tend to work better, at least in our experience.
To get rid of any odours, you can use bicarbonate of soda. Just sprinkle your mattress with a healthy amount of bicarbonate of soda, leave it for at least an hour and then hoover it off.
Your mattress will smell nice and fresh. Bicarb works so well because it absorbs odours very effectively. It also neutralizes odours.
To get the best out of bicarbonate of soda, though, it is best to leave it as long as you can. If you put bicarb on your mattress before you head to work, for example, and then hoover it off when you get home, that will give it a nice amount of time to absorb all of the odours.
I much prefer to use bicarbonate of soda to get rid of odours on my mattress. With the vodka trick above, you do need to air out your mattress until it is completely dry. With the bicarbonate of soda, you don’t. Just sprinkle, leave for an hour, hoover and you’re done.
