There is nothing more annoying than to find your favourite jumper, sweater or pair of trousers covered in bobbles. Or when you buy that cardigan you spotted in a shop window and loved so much, only to get pills all over it after putting it in the wash a few times.
There are ways to prevent your clothes from getting bobbly. You can try to turn them inside out before washing, use liquid detergent, or let them dry naturally. You can even avoid fabrics that are prone to getting pills.
But sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you cannot prevent the lint balls from piling up. So what can you do to remove lint balls from your clothes? Here are a few solutions that may come in handy.
Use tools you have around the house
You may be surprised to know that you can remove lint balls from your clothes with the help of a few items you already own. They are pretty efficient and easy to use.
1. A razor
All you have to do is place your piece of clothing on a flat surface and shave the lint balls. It may take a while, but in the end, you will have an entirely neat sweater.
2. A sandpaper sponge
This is something you might have lying around in your garage. Sanding sponges are normally used for DIY, but you can use them to scrub your clothes and remove lint balls.
3. Velcro hair rollers
They may be designed to curl your hair, but they are also great at getting bobbles off your clothing. Place your sweater on a flat surface and roll the Velcro all over it. The fabric will be pill-free in a matter of minutes.
This may be time-consuming, but it is precise. A pair of scissors is more appropriate for big lint balls, or for garments that are very sensitive. Nail scissors are ideal because they are more accurate than regular ones.
Buy special tools
If you are not satisfied with the results you get from using household items as lint balls removers, you can always go for tools that are specially designed for such a job.
1. Electric sweater shaver
Also known as lint removers, electric sweater shavers are the most useful kind of tool when it comes to removing pilling. They are very efficient, easy to use, and you can use them time and time again. They run on batteries, so they are easy to carry around in your purse or travel bag.
2. Sweater combs
The difference between a regular comb and a sweater comb is that the latter has short and dense teeth. It will comb the pills right off. Just remember to be gentle so as not to damage the fabric in the process.
3. Sweater stones
Like electric lint removers, sweater stones are designed precisely for removing pilling from your clothes. However, they don’t use any electricity. To use one, place the fabric on a flat surface and rub the garments with the sweater stone until the lint balls are gone. Keep in mind to be gentle. Otherwise, you will ruin the piece of clothing altogether.
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to remove pilling from your clothes. Some methods may be time-consuming but free, while others are quicker but require you to invest in some new kit. All you have to do is choose the method that suits you best.
