Over time, floors collect dirt, dust and bits of food and other debris, so you need to clean them regularly. Mopping your floor with warm water is an excellent way to remove dirt and kill bacteria. Here’s the right way to do it:
Step 1: Vacuum or sweep
Start by removing debris and dust by vacuuming or sweeping the floor. If you miss out this step, you will just be pushing this debris around with your mop rather than cleaning the floor properly. If you don’t have a good vacuum cleaner, consider one of these top vacuum cleaners under £100.
Step 2: Get ready
Put some rubber gloves on and read your floor cleaner’s label carefully to make sure you know how to use it safely. Fill the mop bucket with the right amount of cleaning product mixed with hot water. Take care if you use very hot water.
Step 3: Mop
Next, start mopping the floor in the position furthest from the door. Work your way gradually towards the door so that you aren’t stepping over previously mopped areas. Try to make sure the mop is neither too wet nor too dry. Rinse it out at regular intervals.

Step 4: Rinse
It’s a good idea to give the floor a second mop with clean water. This will remove any harmful chemicals and help give the floor a good, consistent finish.
Step 5: Dry
If you don’t want to wait for the floor to dry itself, you should dry it out with a towel. This will prevent people from slipping on the floor or mixing dirt from their shoes with the water thereby making the floor dirty.
